Teaching Proverbs 2:6-8 to Your Family | Help Your Children Keep Their Shield
Feel like you're not the leader in your home? Start with a marriage meeting. In this episode of The Resolute Man Podcast, we walk through Proverbs 2:6-8 and show you, dad, how to teach your family that God is a shield to those who walk with Him.
Here's how to teach this passage to your family:
1. Start with the shield
Before you read, ask your kids: "What is a shield good for?" Protection. Then tell them that this passage is about the God who protects us.
2. Teach them where wisdom comes from (v. 6)
Read verse 6 out loud together. The Lord's wisdom, knowledge, and understanding come from His mouth, and we have it in the Bible. Ask your kids: "Where do we go when we need wisdom?"
3. Teach them that God's wisdom never runs out (v. 7)
God stores up sound wisdom for the upright, and there's plenty available. It doesn't run out, and He's there for you wherever you go. Then make sure your kids hear this: upright doesn't mean perfect. It means a life on a godly path. Ask them: "What does it look like to walk in integrity at school, with friends, or when no one's watching?"
4. Teach them that God watches over them (v. 8)
Those who seek to do good have a guarded path, and God is watching over them. Ask your kids: "Why does it matter that God is watching over us?" Help them see that keeping their shield means staying on His path.

Rejecting passivity has real consequences, so do it anyway. Doing the right thing costs you short-term risk, but it preserves your integrity and reputation in the long run.
Ask "Who is your source?" It's a way to reframe the fear of loss.
Real confidence is faith-based. Confidence comes from con (with) and fide (faith), literally "with faith." For a Christian man, that faith comes from Scripture: "faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."
This week's challenge: Hold a marriage meeting this week. Get on the same page with your wife, then pick one dinner or car ride to read Proverbs 2:6-8 with your kids. It won't be perfect, and that's okay.
